The Itching Question That’s More Than Skin Deep

Studies show that the power of suggestion can induce itchiness ? but scientists don’t know what this irritation is, what causes it, or why it feels so good to cure. Marc Abrahams, editor of the Annals of Improbable Research, talks about how talking about the science of itches might have you scratching right now.

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

Next up: Mosquitoes, chickenpox, sheep wool. People can name a hundred things that can make them itchy, but no one can tell you why. It’s had scientists scratching their heads for years. Has it got you scratching yours? Studies show that just by listening to, say, a radio broadcast talking about certain uncomfortable sensations could have you squirming in your seat. Fighting to scratch that itch already, yeah? On the phone is Marc Abrahams, editor for the Annals of Improbable Research. He’s going to tell us why you may already feel like scratching. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY, Marc.

MARC ABRAHAMS: Hi, Ira. Are you scratching?

FLATOW: I’m wondering, how many people out there – is the power of suggestion, does it work in scratching?

ABRAHAMS: That was the big question. Scratching and itching are really mysterious. For as long as people have been digging into the nervous system, trying to figure out how the brain and nerves work, they’ve been looking at itching and scratching as great mysteries. There have been lots of explanations, but nobody really knows how they work. And there have been, in the past 15 years, two studies that got at the big question of how much of this can happen just by suggestion.

FLATOW: Hmm. And in other words, if we get a group of people together and sort of suggest something that’s scratchy, they’ll start itching?

ABRAHAMS: Yeah, yeah. So there was one study that was done about 10 years ago in Germany. They invited a lot of people to come to a movie theatre. They were told that this was going to be filming a TV show. And they were shown, first, a bunch of slides of things that were thought to induce itching. They weren’t told to itch or anything, but they’re just shown these things. And then after that, they were shown a bunch of other slides of things, like babies and soft down and soft skin that were thought to make people relax and be not itchy. What was really going on was the TV cameras were focusing on the audience, and they were recording the audience.

And afterwards the scientists had a bunch of people look at the video tapes and try to very carefully take records for each person in the audience of how often they scratch. And what they found, they say, is that while watching those slides of really itch-inducing things, people did scratch themselves a lot more. And then when they started to see the slides of nice soft babies and things, they stopped scratching to a degree. So that was one experiment. About five years before that, in the U.S., at Indiana State University, there was a guy named Mitchell who was working on his Ph.D. dissertation, and he, on the surface, was interested in subliminal suggestions, you know, those old stories – you go to a movie theater and they stuck in these real quick flashes of words that say buy popcorn. And the old stories are that people would rush out and buy popcorn, and nobody is sure that ever happened. So he was trying to look at this, and he got itching and scratching involved because he wanted some way that was inarguably evidence.

And so he prepared some audio tapes, and one audio tape had subliminal messages of scratching, people saying scratch and itch and things like that, but recorded – the words were recorded so softly nobody could detect them, nobody could hear them, and then they put some music on top of that. So that was one group of people listening to that tape. Second group of people listened to a tape of just the music with no subliminal suggestions. And then a third group listened to a tape that had just somebody overtly saying, itch and scratch, and the results came out not what they expected exactly. Results came out on the subliminal tape, almost nobody was itching. And most people were itching on the tape that had just music, and not so many were itching on the tape that was telling you to itch. So it was quite mysterious.

And the result of both of these things, when you add them together, is that it’s pretty much where people started. Nobody really understands a whole lot about how itching ties in with suggestions. Now, this sounds like funny stuff and probably is, but on the other hand, there are a lot of people who suffer from itching, and it can be a terrible, horrible thing that goes on and on and can ruin people’s lives. And doctors really, for the most part, don’t know what to do about that.

FLATOW: Interesting. Talking with Marc Abrahams on SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR about studies about itching and scratching. One other study that is interesting – and I’m itching right now.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: I wonder how many of the people are itching as we’re talking.

ABRAHAMS: I don’t intend to make you too much more uncomfortable, Ira, but could you tell me exactly where on your body you are itching.

FLATOW: I’m itching on my back.

ABRAHAMS: Your back?

FLATOW: My back.

ABRAHAMS: OK. There’s an experiment that was done recently. It was published just a few months ago, and it was done in, I think, four different countries, in the U.K., Saudi Arabia, United States and Singapore, I think, was the fourth one. And they were scratching people, and they’re trying to figure out, you know, there’s some pleasure involved…

FLATOW: Right.

ABRAHAMS: …when you finally do scratch. So they’re trying to measure that part of it. So they had some people who were trained to do the scratching using special brushes, and they would have them scratch on three different body parts. And periodically they would ask the person who is being scratched to indicate, you know, a scale of one to nine, I think, how pleasurable it was. And what they ended up discovering, they said, was this really is very different on different body parts. They measured the forearm, the back, and then they also scratched on people’s ankles. And they found that there’s a great amount of pleasure initially when you start scratching any of those places. But the only place they found where the pleasure keeps on – you can keep scratching for a long time, and it stays pleasurable, is on the ankle.

FLATOW: Wow. Ah.

ABRAHAMS: And nobody really knows why.

FLATOW: You can scratch – in other words, you can satisfy the itch on the back and the arm, but you can keep scratching your ankle, and it still feels good.

ABRAHAMS: Yeah, so exactly that. The first two, you satisfy it, but it’s just satisfied. The third one, you’re getting some pleasure. And also, nobody really has any clear idea whether this is tied to something important or trivial or what. It’s really a deep mystery.

FLATOW: Wow. So scratch – so, well, you know, your feet are near the ground, right? You’d think that they would be abrasive – need abrasive things down there that make you want to scratch.

ABRAHAMS: Yeah.

FLATOW: So maybe your ankles, you know, maybe that’s the pleasurable part of – I’m just guessing here.

ABRAHAMS: I guess, yeah. You can – the more you think about it, the more you can start to think of all kinds of interesting experiments you could do, and people have done a lot of them. It’s just nobody really seems to have done many experiments that told them anything very definite. They always end up going in a circle with just – well, the only way to put it is scratching your head about how does this stuff work.

FLATOW: Yeah. You know what they say – you’re going to need a notion of calamine lotion.

ABRAHAMS: Some of them say that, yes.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: All right, Marc. That’s very interesting. Thank you. Thank you for enlightening us about scratching and itching. And now I’m squirming, so…

ABRAHAMS: Good luck, Ira.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: Thanks a lot. Kristy Campbell: The Five Regrets of The Divorced

Talking with and connecting to other divorcing women has become my mission. I’m in the process of my second divorce and I see that the same isolation, loneliness, and judgment exists for divorced and single moms as it did 15 years ago, during my first divorce. Nothing has progressed. There still seems to be a great deal of stigma surrounding divorce and the subject remains taboo in most social circles. I found this tip in a divorce book: “What happens in a marriage is private — what happens in a divorce should remain private as well.”

I disagree.

The legal process shreds families and is not always fair and just as one would assume. The emotional upheaval is a day-to-day roller coaster. Divorce is a monumental life experience much like a marriage, birth or death. Not talking about it seems unhealthy, so I’d like to start the conversation by launching Divorcehood.

Divorcehood is an empowering place to share stories, compare notes, ask questions, and more than anything, make connections. I partnered with Storey Jones, a divorce consultant and owner of Lemon Tree Advisors, to launch this community. Our goal is to give support to women who are on the divorce journey by offering them a place to share their experiences as well as to gain specific strategic and tactical tools to help navigate the day-to-day trenches of divorce.

As we’ve reached out and talked to divorced women across the country, we’ve seen some common issues emerge. We recently complied a list of what we discovered to be the five most common regrets of the divorced. Do any of these apply to you?

1. Giving Up A Career
Many women face a choice when they have children: off-ramp your career and become a full-time mom or stay on the career highway. When the marriage works, no one thinks twice about putting a career on hold in order to stay home with children. When the marriage fails, the stay-at-home moms say the same thing: “I should have never given up my career.” For many women, going back to their old career is proving to be more difficult than it sounds.

2. Not Being Financially Involved
Whether or not the wife works, a lot of households still follow a traditional division of labor with the husband serving as the CFO for the family and the wife doing everything else. When the marriage fails, many women realize they do not have a clue about any family financial accounts and do not even know how to begin to find passwords or account records.

3. Putting Up With Poor Treatment; Not Speaking Up
We asked women about how they felt they were treated in their marriage. We’ve heard stories about missed birthdays or anniversaries, expectations for clean houses, hot meals, and well mannered kids, demands for sex, and requests for daily-ironed shirts. (I know, it’s 2012.) Many women agree that we put ourselves second for the benefit of the family… not as a martyr but with an eye on a greater goal. After a divorce, one common question always comes up: If I would have spoken up or expected more for myself during the marriage, I wonder if things would have turned out differently?

4. Staying For The Kids
This is a huge unanswered question for many married women: When the relationship falls apart, do we stay for the kids? We talked to one woman who decided to stay in a bad marriage until her youngest son left for college. The month after her son left, she left her husband. The son dropped out of college a few months later as he had no clue about marriage problems between his parents. She told us her son isn’t speaking to either parent since he can’t figure out whom to trust or what part of his childhood he can believe in. She said she regrets not leaving earlier as she knew she was not going to continue to put up with her husband’s infidelities forever. She didn’t anticipate her son would view her attempt to keep the family together as living a lie.

5. Marrying For The Wrong Reasons

The biggest reason for divorce continues to be… marriage. We need to do a better job about educating our children as to what marriage is and how it works. There are too many Hollywood movies and happily-ever-after fairy tales that make marriage look simple: fall in love, get married, have some kids, live a long and happy life together.

What do successfully married women say about their marriages? We are partners; we are building a family with common goals and dreams; we are friends; we work hard everyday at our relationship; we have each other’s backs; we have bad days, months, even years, but we are committed to our family more than our own individual needs.

Some divorced women have admitted to us that they married for financial stability, parental expectations, or even because they thought it was what they were supposed to do at the time. They didn’t marry for love and friendship, and they now understand that they set themselves up for failure.

Simple Task For 6-Month-Olds May Predict Risk Of Autism – Kiefit.com

A new prospective study of six-month-old infants at high genetic risk for autism identified weak head and neck control as a red flag for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and language and/or social developmental delays. Researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute concluded that a simple “pull-to-sit” task could be added to existing developmental screenings at pediatric well visits to improve early detection of developmental delays. “Research aimed at improving early detection of autism has largely focused on measurement of social and communication development,” said Dr…

Getting Tips For Auto Insurance Which Helps! | Internet Marketing

Liability auto insurance is the very minimum that you have to carry in each state, in order to be legal to have your car on the road. This will cover any injuries, car repair, and any other damages that you may cause in an accident. You can still choose how much liability to have and the Claude Giroux Jersey deductible amount, but it will not cover you or your car.

One of the best ways to drop your auto insurance rates is to show the insurance company that you are a safe, reliable driver. To do this, you should think about attending a safe-driving course. These courses are affordable, quick, and you could end up saving thousands of dollars over the Claude Giroux Jersey life of your insurance policy.

There are many TV ads for auto insurance, most of them advertise incredible savings and claim to be cheaper than their competitors. You should not subscribe to an insurance based only on what you have seen on a TV ad. The prices given on TV are based on a particular configuration of demographics and might not apply to you.

If you are renting a car for the weekend, you may not need to purchase the rental company?s auto insurance policy. In some cases, the rental insurance will cover the same things that your standard auto policy would cover. In other instances, if you are renting the car with a credit card, look into your credit card policy. Many major credit cards will provide free insurance coverage specifically for rental cars as part of the credit card agreement.

Make sure you know what kind of coverage you have in your policy. Be aware of what your auto insurance is actually insuring. Many things affect the final cost of the policy. There is bodily injury liability, property damage liability, medical payments, uninsured motorist protection, collision coverage, and comprehensive coverage.

When considering extras for your auto insurance, you can most likely do without the www.philadelphiaflyerjerseyshop.com car rental insurance. You will pay nearly $50 a year for rental insurance, when that is the same cost for renting a car for one to two days. Also, your rental car is most likely already covered under your policy, anyhow.

Try to maintain good credit scores. A few states, like California, ban the use of your credit score when calculating insurance premiums, but most allow it. Companies see people with low credit scores as high risk customers, so they?ll probably charge a hefty premium compared to a person with high credit scores.

If you travel often and use rental cars during your travels, it might be beneficial to opt for including coverage for rental cars on your personal auto insurance. The amount charged by car rental agencies varies, but at times can be quite a significant increase in the amount you pay for your car rental.

When you are shopping around for auto insurance policies, watch the amount, take note of any quotes. The competition between companies is fierce, so you need to find and compare different quotes from many carriers. Some policies might have the same coverage and deductibles, but the six-month quotes could vary between ten and twenty percent between the companies.

Driving less can help you save money on your auto insurance. If you?ve retired or started telecommuting, tell your insurance agent right away. Without those long commutes every day, you?ll probably be able to get a lower Danny Briere Jersey premium. The fewer miles you drive, the better rate you?re likely to get.

Now that you have thoroughly researched what a variety of Claude Giroux Jersey auto insurers can offer you, you can weigh and balance them. If lowest cost trumps every other consideration, your decision is easy. But if other factors in the policies and coverage and location play a role, you may decide another company?s offer is preferable to the one giving the lowest quote.

Thursday, May 17, 2012 – I'm Sorry for Cursing – Colon / rectal cancer

Most of you probably know that my scan was good today!!!? Stable tumors, and if there was growth, it was very very small.? I will take that, thank you.? :)
Eric joined me at the cancer center (he worked and I yakked at my therapist and used up all her kleenex).? Later we went to the lab and I was told I didn’t have an appointment with them.? What WHAT?? It wasn’t a big deal, I just went back up after seeing the doc.

The doc came in all smiles, I knew he had something good to tell me.? We chatted a bit about the tumors, and I’m going to continue FOLFOX/Avastin until the next scan.? He checked me over and I passed, my blood work eventually came back, so off to chemo I went.?

Chemo was uneventful, as usual.? I knitted until the ativan kicked in, then watched Daria and dozed off.?

So this week has been my week of waiting.? Not trying to take control or fix things myself, but to just pray and wait.? I listened to a sermon about waiting last weekend, that it’s important to sit still, stand still, and be still so that God can work on things in HIS time, not in my time.? So I focused on that.? Praying in a bold, confident way, and being willing to wait.? It wasn’t easy.? In fact, it was pretty freaking hard at times.? After all, I know what’s best for me, I know what I want.?

Psalm 40:1
I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry
And then, after the results today, this verse stuck out at me:

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

So yeah.? I’m feeling relieved and thankful and so so glad.? Everyone who prayed and/or thought about me, thank you so much.? I believe it really does make a difference.

I’m going to go rest now…I feel blah.? Have a good weekend all!!!

Did Facebook and Mobile Gaming Kill GameStop? | Wall St. Cheat …

According to a recent report from NPD Group, the traditional video game industry is taking a beating. Retail video game sales plummeted 42 percent in April, compared to the same month last year. It was the fourth consecutive month of double-digit declines for the sector. Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and mobile gaming through products from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) continue to pressure brick-and-mortar stores.

Don?t Miss: Where Will Facebook Trade Today?

The market research firm announced that retailers raked in $292.1 million in game sales last month, down sharply from $503.2 million a year earlier. The only part of the video game segment that showed an increase was accessories, which edged slightly higher to $148.6 million from $147.8 million. According to Matt Matthews from Gamasutra, if the decline from 2011 continues at the current rate, retail video game revenue in the United States for 2012 could fall below the $12.6 billion amount seen in 2006, when Microsoft?s Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox 360 was just booting up.

?Simply stated, there were notably fewer? new game releases, explained NPD analyst Anita Frazier, according to GameZone. ?I think it?s a simple as that, because when we see compelling content come into the market, the games are still selling as well as ever. We just saw a lot less of this in April as compared to last year.? However, the problem is that fewer compelling games are coming to the market and consumers are satisfying their gaming needs through less expensive apps, found on tablets and smartphones.

Don?t Miss: Uncle Sam Must Love These 30 Companies

Companies are having to rely more on past blockbusters to attract attention and sales. Activision Blizzard Inc. (NASDAQ:ATVI), the world?s largest video game maker by market capitalization, recently launched Diablo III, a new version of the popular exploration game that last debuted in 2000. In 2010, the company also released a sequel to StarCraft, a whopping 12 years after the original.

Cheap or even free games from Facebook and mobile devices have also given way to the rise of the casual gamer. Addictive games such as ?Words with Friends? and ?FarmVille? from Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ:ZNGA) allows users to receive their gaming-fix without spending $60 on a single console game. The quality is certainly lower on Facebook or apps, but when it comes to spending $60 on a console game or $5 on an app, the quality appears to be good enough.

GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME) is one of the clear losers in the shift taking place among the video game industry. The world?s largest brick-and-mortar video game retailer recently announced dismal financial results before Thursday?s opening bell. For the first-quarter, the company earned $72.5 million (54 cents per share), compared to $80.4 million (56 cents per share) a year earlier. Revenues also declined 12.2 percent to $2 billion from the year-earlier quarter. For each of the last four quarters, the company has seen its net income fall. In the fourth-quarter of the last fiscal year, net income fell 26.5 percent while the figure fell 1.5 percent in the third-quarter of the last fiscal year and 23.4 percent in the second-quarter of the last fiscal year. Shares of GameStop closed 11 percent lower on Thursday and are down 23 percent year-to-date.

Physical therapist, health care administrator, or … – Fitness Websites

Which care is best for me: physical therapist, health care administrator, or pharmacist?
Here is a little about me:
I love anatomy and the whole idea of health & fitness. I also enjoy sports and working out myself. I like talking to people and socializing as well. Also I am an excellent English student and a fairly good Math student, too. I want a career that I will enjoy, make decent money (,000+), and not have to go to school over 7 years to become. Also something that is interesting and not just the exact same ol? thing day after day. Right now I work at a local pharmacy (CVS) as a cashier in the store and it seems as though pharmacy is a bit boring. But then again, maybe I am not seeing the whole picture. But after doing a lot of research I can to the above careers and each of them interest me in a different way so based on the info I provided which is best for me?
If there are any other jobs that fit the above criteria and that you think would suit me then do tell! Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

I cannot think of a more fulfilling career than physical therapy for you! Your interests are at the ideals of a PT?health and fitness are our ultimate goals. Our knowledge of anatomy of the neuromusculoskeletal system is extensive (and after 7 years, I still learn more everyday). You will be required to take gross human anatomy.

As a physical therapist, you will have many opportunities to work in a variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitations centers, outpatient clinics, work hardening programs, schools, private practice, home health, extended care facilities?the list goes on.

While some leave the field due to injury, I would estimate that it is less than other health care professions since part of education and core knowledge is ergonomics?how to do things the right way without hurting yourself. I see far more nurses, patient care technicians, pharmacits, lab techs, and even doctors as patients with work related injuries as opposed to physical therapists. However, it also highly depends on the setting you work in.

My job is never the same day to day. My reasoning and problem solving skills are tested every day. I have seen hundreds of patients for rehab from their total knee replacement?but no two ever act the same!

If you like to ?socialize? and enjoy being around people, I think you will get much more fulfillment at a PT as opposed to an adiministrator (who often do not work directly with people) or pharmacist. You get to know most of your patients deeply?I will spend more time with a patient in one wek than most people do with their physician for an entire year.

All PT programs in the US are now either MS or DPT level?the structure of most programs is such that you will complete it in 6-7 years. Math is always a plus?helpful for the chem and physics you will need to take.

Average salary in 2005 for a new graduate was just under ,000/year, but most PTs with a few years of experience made between ,000-,000.

This is an excellent time to persue PT as enrollment has been dropping?making it somewhat ?less competitive? to get into the professional phase.

How Diablo Changed Everything about Gaming ? Mancave Daily …

Say goodbye to your social life

Yesterday saw the release (and the subsequent launch problems)?of Diablo III. Now that your body has forced you to surface for bathroom, food, and sleep, we?d like to entertain you with an oral history of how the Diablo franchise turned role-playing into a respectable activity?or a remorseless addiction. It?s a matter of perspective, really.?

Video games have had a consistent, if not odd, evolution through the years. First there were the arcade games, like Asteroids and Pac-Man, where beating levels really just meant the screen changing colors and the geometric shapes and ghosts moving a hell of a lot faster, until you eventually lost all of your lives. The point of the games was amassing an unbeatable score so that your initials would stay at the top of the leaderboard forever, or until the machine was unplugged.

Then console games began their reign. Scores were barely thought about. Most games, like The Legend of Zelda, didn?t even keep any sort of score. Like Capt. Obvious of football Herman Edwards once said, ?You play to win the game,? or in this case, to save the princess (in just about every single video game, even ones involving plumbers), watch the ending cinematics, and shut the game off before the credits are done rolling. This made sense. You don?t want to have to keep saving the princess over and over again. Eventually you?d have to give up on her and cross her off in your black book.

Then came the era of Final Fantasy 7. Beating the game wasn?t enough. Instead, you had to gather 4 of every single weapon, piece of armor, and spell in the game in order to launch an attack that goes on for about one and a half minutes. Unless you have Mimic. Then you can see it multiple times in a row! Probably enough time to grab a beer and a bathroom break at the same time.

Finally, the Diablo franchise emerged, a Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game that synchronized this love of collecting game items and possessing enough power to win the game in the press of one button into both an addiction, and later a side job. With the release of Diablo 3, we will dissect each of the Diablo games to figure out how we became so insane.

It all began here sixteen years ago

Classic Diablo

The game that jump-started popular MMORPGs was probably the purest game in the Diablo franchise. Using three different characters (warrior, rogue, and sorcerer), a player could literally use any item and cast any spell, provided they screwed up their character attributes enough to make it work. The game itself was straightforward in regards to ?winning?. Levels never looked the same or even used all of the same quests each time you would play through, but there was an end. You kill Diablo, you win the game.

That wasn?t enough for most gamers, so the idea of gathering stronger items in the game, which would drop at random, was made a part of the game?s re-playability. Oh, you didn?t collect your Windforce bow and Royal Circlet? Well, play again noob.

Look at all you achieved in your younger days!

Another game perk that helped re-playability was being able to kill other online players within the game as well as monsters. This led to players spending weeks trying to get their characters maxed out at level 50 to give them just enough edge to kill a player with the same junk as you equipped.

That wasn?t enough, however, as pirate programs called trainers were invented, and used to max out characters past their respective attribute caps, create weapons that dealt hundreds of thousands of damage points, and officially ended Diablo?s reign as the supreme online game when people got bored when two hacked rogues lined up to battle based on the luck of whose Blood Star spell hit first.

The Grim Reaper ? More frightening than the Devil? Discuss

Diablo 2 and Diablo: Lord of Destruction

I?m sure that Blizzard entertainment could have fixed classic Diablo if they had wanted to, but they were already working on a new project: Diablo 2. With it came more characters, more items, and a new age in gaming: buying and selling items and even characters for real money, thanks to Ebay.

Initially, hacks were created that helped dupe the more powerful items, like Silks of the Victor, the Windforce bow (again), Gull daggers to help with the new magic-find attribute to help you find even more good stuff, and the Stone of Jordan ring, a level-increasing ring that became a form of currency in the online community of Diablo. Blizzard did its best to stop the corruption of the game with these hacks but not before the duping of godly items, rare weapons, armors, and rings that were insanely powerful.

The answer is C) Some sort of hybrid Devil-Death monster

These items became so powerful that they were sold on eBay for actual money, some for as high as $20 at times, as well as character accounts that were already at level 99. The point of actually playing the game in order to achieve online godliness came to an end, as any schmo with a credit card could easily become an elite character in the game. Play the game? Who needs to waste all that time?

And what did people do when they achieved these levels? They repeatedly entered Cow Runs in order to get even more items, and once in a while killed a PVP character solo or in a guild war. Sure, you killed Diablo or Baal once in a while, but only because they dropped some bad-ass loot. The game became secondary to the collecting.

?

This?this is what mankind was made to do

Diablo 3?

It?s hard to say where Diablo 3 will take its fans, but Blizzard is already doing what individual gamers did in Diablo 2, and what the company did in its other hit sensation, World of Warcraft. They have set up an auction house so players can buy and sell their loot for real money. AGAIN.

While the idea is not as sketchy as buying an item from a random person on the internet, then waiting for them in a Battlenet region to make the real trade and hoping that they don?t just say, ?Yeah, I just gave it to you. Your online connection may be screwy,? thus screwing you over for $10.00 (not that this has EVER happened to me), it still makes a gamer wonder how great the game really has to be if the end result will be about the same as Diablo 2. How many people are actually going to play through the game instead of having friends help them get up to the level cap so they can press that button so they automatically win the game? Will Windforce return?

I?ll let you know. Of course I?m going to play it. You know?for research.

Ukraine To Increase Natural Gas Production, Decrease Dependence On Russian Energy

Ukrainian Prime Minster Mykola Azarov announced on Tuesday that Ukraine will ramp up its natural gas production by up to 25 percent over the next three years, a move that could help the country break free of its energy dependence on neighboring Russia.

Ukraine has chosen to partner with Western oil companies Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron to develop two of its shale gas fields. Both companies outbid other contenders for the partnership, including Russian company TNK-BP.

With 42 trillion cubic feet of shale gas reserves, Ukraine has the fourth-largest potential supply of natural gas in all of Europe, according?to the Financial Times. But due to a history of inefficient energy practices and stalled development, the country still imports most of its natural gas from Russia.

While Azarov made his projection in Brussels, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich talked to reporters in Moscow about plans to modernize Ukraine’s gas infrastructure and diversify energy suppliers.

“We are working, for instance, with Turkmenistan, we are also working with Azerbaijan, and we are seeking such opportunities,” he said. “Why? Because we are unhappy with the price for Russian gas. And this is quite natural.”

A Strained Relationship

These announcements could mark a turning point in a long history of energy-related economic co-dependence between Russia and Ukraine.

“The dispute between Russia and Ukraine has its roots in the Cold War economic relationship between the Soviet Union and Ukraine,” reported the Journal of Energy Security (JES) in 2011.

“As part of its satellite system, the USSR built the Ukrainian pipeline system to supply Eastern Europe with gas from Russia and its Central Asian republics.”

Today, Russia is a huge exporter of natural gas to the European Union, meeting over 40 percent of its demand. A full 80 percent of that supply travels through Ukrainian pipelines, and Ukraine itself is one of Russia’s top importers.

This has created a tense relationship.

“In the post-Cold War era, while Russia has sought to raise the prices that Ukraine pays for gas, Ukraine has habitually used its near- monopoly on gas transit routes from Russia to Europe to push back,” said the JES report.

The knotty situation came to a head after Ukraine’s Orange Revolution of 2004 and 2005, when pro-Western politician Yulia Tymoshenko was elected as Prime Minster of Ukraine and the relationship between Moscow and Kiev deteriorated.

This conflict eventually precipitated one of the worst energy crises in Europe three years ago, when Russia accused Ukraine of stealing gas and switched off all supplies that ran through Ukrainian pipelines. Countries across Europe found themselves scrambling for alternative sources of fuel, and Brussels pressured Moscow and Kiev to resolve their dispute.
